Rustic Farmhouse trends are growing in preferred styles of adults of all ages. The homey feeling you get when you walk into a room decorated with rustic-inspired or country farmhouse inspired pieces is a feeling of welcome, warmth and comfort. Elements of this design can easily act as accents in a space or you can decorate an entire space to be rustic farmhouse style. So what can you do to add this trend to your home? What specifically does it entail, what makes one piece rustic and one piece not? There are a number of accent pieces and objects as well as materials you can use to get that rustic farmhouse feel.

A rustic home feels most natural when it includes natural pieces throughout the home. Think about adding some sort of wood paneling accent to the walls, not the 70’s ugly wood paneling, something more like beadboard panel,  shiplap paneling, or even wainscoting. Combining the paneling with hard wood floors will really give a space an old farmhouse feel. Another trend in this style is using brick or other natural elements in the style too.

A fireplace adorned with river rocks or brick is the epitome of rustic design and adds the most warmth to a home. Take your rustic design a step further by placing a steel log rack nearby so you don’t have to go outside for extra firewood. Don’t have a fireplace? Add a welcoming warmth to your space with an electric fireplace. Electric fireplaces have evolved to look more realistic and they are generally safer than a traditional wood-burning fireplace. If you don’t have room in your budget for a fireplace, candles can also give the same type of warmth factor as a fireplace without adding too heavily to the design. In addition, you can easily add warmth by adding warm colors to your design palate. Try adding drapes in warm colors, area rugs and blankets. A neat idea is to get an old wooden ladder and use that as a blanket rack in your living room.

The best part about the rustic farmhouse trends is that it is inexpensive and allows you to use your imagination. You can utilize twigs, leaves, nuts, acorns, bark or anything from a walk through the woods as decorative accents! Snip ferns from outside for your vase in the kitchen. Got some old letters? Hang them on the wall as wall art. You can also try hanging or placing objects like antique teapots, old tin containers, signs, or even a rustic or natural looking tabletop fountain.

Using visually heavy rustic furniture is key for a rustic room. A big old wood farm table for the dining area, an antique four-poster bed for the master or charming braided rag rugs and lots of patterns like plaid, argyle, floral and toile all work great in the design. Do you have a beloved antique piece like an old sewing machine stand? You can make that into an occasional table or console table to add extra interest to your home’s design.
